What it is

Chickweed is a tender edible wild herb with a mild green flavour and a long history in traditional herbal practice and seasonal cooking. It is chosen for a gentle infusion, compresses, washes and traditional skin care.

Main properties

Herbal literature describes chickweed as soothing, emollient, vulnerary and mildly anti-inflammatory, with a traditional association with rheumatic discomfort. It contains saponins, flavonoids and vitamin C, constituents behind current interest in its antioxidant and skin-soothing qualities.

Uses

Chickweed is mainly chosen for a gentle everyday infusion and for traditional external skin care. Compresses and washes have been used for dryness, itching and irritation, and as supportive care for eczema- or psoriasis-prone skin. Folk practice also links it with muscular discomfort and rheumatic aches.

For culinary use, young fresh chickweed leaves are traditionally added to salads and soups. The dried herb mainly contributes its green flavour to an infusion.

Preparation & dosage

For an infusion, add 1 teaspoon, approximately 1–2 g, to 250 ml hot water, cover for 5–10 minutes and strain. Traditional use is up to 3 times daily for a short period. For external use, allow the infusion to cool completely and apply with a clean compress or as a gentle wash on intact skin.

Quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published herbal-medicine literature. For prolonged use or if you take medication, consult a healthcare professional.

Combinations with other herbs

For a mild infusion, chickweed is traditionally paired with chamomile or calendula. In external preparations it may be combined with calendula, after testing a small area of skin first.

Precautions

Avoid if allergic to plants in the Caryophyllaceae family. Large amounts may upset the stomach because of their saponin content. Safety data are insufficient during pregnancy, breastfeeding and early childhood. Do not apply homemade preparations to open wounds or infected skin. Persistent itching, extensive eczema or psoriasis should be assessed by a healthcare professional.

Frequently asked questions

Which part of chickweed is in this herb?

It contains the dried and cut aerial parts of the herb, not only the leaves or the root.

Can I use chickweed externally?

Yes. A well-strained infusion, once completely cool, may be used on a clean compress over intact skin.

Is dried chickweed suitable for salads?

Its food use mainly concerns the tender fresh parts. The dried form is better suited to an infusion or an external herbal preparation.
