What it is

Aromatic celery seed for culinary use, traditional digestion and bloating, urinary support, and blends focused on joints and uric acid.

Key properties

It contains essential oil with phthalides, flavonoids and fixed oil. Its aromatic, slightly bitter profile is linked to traditional digestive and diuretic use.

Uses

Traditionally used for gas and indigestion and increased urination. Herbal literature also includes celery seed in blends for arthritis and rheumatic discomfort, gout and uric acid, presented as traditional use. In cooking it flavours stocks, pickles, breads, sauces and lower-salt seasoning blends.

Preparation & dosage

Infusion

Crush ½–1 teaspoon and steep in 250 ml hot water for 10 minutes. Up to 1–2 times daily.

Culinary use

Use whole or freshly ground seeds sparingly.

Amounts are indicative and based on traditional use and published herbal literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Combinations with other herbs

Combine with fennel and anise for digestion, or with nettle and goldenrod in traditional urinary blends.

Precautions

Avoid medicinal amounts in pregnancy, active kidney inflammation and allergy to celery or other Apiaceae. Use caution with diuretics, anticoagulants and photosensitivity. Celery is a declarable food allergen.

Frequently asked questions

Are they true seeds?

Botanically they are small ripe fruits, although sold as seeds.

Should they be crushed?

Light crushing just before infusion releases aroma more effectively.

Can they be used in food?

Yes, sparingly in pickles, breads, stocks and seasoning blends.
