Cascara sagrada is the aged bark of the North American tree Frangula purshiana, formerly known as Rhamnus purshiana. Indigenous peoples of the Pacific coast used the bark, and the Spanish name means “sacred bark”. It is associated with short-term use for occasional constipation.
Fresh bark is more irritating. Traditional processing cuts and ages it for at least one year before use, changing the anthranoid profile. This ageing is a defining pharmacognostic feature.
Key properties
Characteristic constituents are cascarosides, hydroxyanthracene glycosides metabolised in the large intestine, where they increase motility and water secretion. The bark is therefore described as a stimulant laxative and bitter digestive tonic.
Cascara was historically used for chronic constipation and entered the United States Pharmacopoeia in 1890. Modern safety practice restricts it to occasional constipation for the shortest possible period.
Uses
Cascara is selected when short-term stimulation of bowel movement is needed and gentler measures such as water, movement and increased fibre have not been enough. Effects commonly appear after several hours, explaining bedtime use. It is not suitable as daily bowel maintenance.
Its bitter character was also linked with digestion and relaxed intestinal muscle. Older formulas paired it with aromatic carminative herbs for cramps and flavour.
Preparation & dosage
Bark decoction: use ½–1 teaspoon in 1 cup of water. Simmer, remove from the heat and leave for 10 minutes before straining. Drink before bedtime and maintain adequate water during the day. Use only for a few days and no longer than 7 days.
The quantities are indicative and based on traditional use and published herbal medicine literature. For extended use or while taking medication, consult a healthcare professional.
Pairs well with
Traditional combinations include liquorice or aromatic carminative herbs for a gentler flavour and fewer cramps. Liquorice requires caution with hypertension, low potassium and heart or kidney disease.
Precautions
Avoid during pregnancy, breastfeeding and in children under 12. Do not use with intestinal obstruction or narrowing, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, appendicitis, unexplained abdominal pain, dehydration or electrolyte disorders. Prolonged use can cause bowel dependence, potassium loss and interactions with diuretics, corticosteroids, cardiac glycosides and medicines affected by potassium. Persistent constipation requires medical assessment.
Frequently asked questions
When does cascara sagrada usually work?
Commonly after several hours, which explains the traditional bedtime timing.
For how many days is cascara bark used?
Only short term and no longer than 7 days.
Is cascara suitable for daily chronic constipation?
Modern use is for occasional constipation. Persistent need calls for assessment and a different bowel plan.
