Caraway is the seed of Carum carvi, offered as a powder — the plant known in Greek as agriokymino or karvi. Botanically it is related to fennel and is not the same as cumin (Cuminum cyminum), despite the shared vernacular name. It concerns those interested in bloating, dyspepsia and intestinal cramps, as well as anyone looking for an aromatic spice for breads and cheeses.
Key properties
The seeds are characterised as antispasmodic, carminative, digestive stimulants and antimicrobial. They stimulate the production of gastric fluids. Two constituents of the essential oil, carvone and carvene, soothe the smooth muscle tissue of the digestive tract and help expel gas — the source of the carminative action.
Uses
Who it is for
The seeds are traditionally associated with bloating and flatulence, with dyspepsia, with cramps and colic, with nervous digestive disorders, and historically with menstrual cramps.
How it is commonly used
The flavour recalls mint and anise. In culinary use the seeds go in whole to flavour bread, and also into meat dishes and certain cheeses. In countries around the world they are a traditional ingredient in foods that are heavy and hard to digest — their presence there is not only aromatic but digestive.
Preparation and dosage
Infusion: 1.5–2.5 g of seeds — about half to one teaspoon — in a cup of boiling water for 10–15 minutes, covered so the essential oil is not lost. Drink 3 times daily, after meals. Daily total up to 7.5 g. Self-treatment does not exceed two weeks of continuous use.
Quantities are indicative, based on traditional use and published herbal literature. For prolonged use or if you are on medication, consult a health professional.
Precautions
The seeds are generally regarded as very safe in culinary amounts. In therapeutic amounts they are not used by children, by pregnant or breastfeeding women, or by anyone with liver or gallbladder disease. The essential oil is not given to infants and young children, as it can cause laryngospasm. Allergic reactions are rarely reported in people sensitive to the carrot family, such as celery and carrot. Persistent bloating or abdominal pain needs medical investigation.
Frequently asked questions
Is it the same as cumin?
No. Caraway is Carum carvi, botanically related to fennel. Cumin is a different species, Cuminum cyminum, with a different aroma.
When is the infusion taken?
After meals, three times a day, when the aim is bloating and heavy digestion. The cup is covered during infusion so the essential oil is not lost.
How are the seeds used in cooking?
Whole, to flavour bread, meat dishes and certain cheeses. Their taste recalls mint and anise and suits heavy foods particularly well.
