What it is

Calendula flowers are a bright herbal material for gentle external skin applications and mouth or throat rinses. Tradition also prepares them as a simple tea for digestive and menstrual comfort.

Key properties

Traditional literature describes calendula as healing, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antihaemorrhagic, antiseptic and soothing. Contemporary herbal literature recognises traditional use for minor skin inflammation, support of small-wound healing and mild inflammation of the mouth or throat.

Uses

Recorded uses of the herb include:

  • skin irritation and rashes
  • wounds
  • bruises
  • hives
  • acne
  • boils
  • athlete's foot
  • fungal complaints
  • eczema
  • psoriasis
  • dermatitis
  • thread veins
  • varicose veins
  • leg ulcers
  • chilblains as traditional external uses

Painful menstruation and digestive inflammation or ulcers belong to broader internal tradition.

For the skin it is used as a wash or dressing on a small, clean superficial area. A mouth rinse is not swallowed. Internal use belongs to broader traditional practice, while the best-documented uses are external applications and mouth rinses.

Preparation & dosage

External use or mouth rinse

Use 1–2 g, about 1 teaspoon, in 200 ml boiling water for 10 minutes. Allow to cool and apply 2–4 times daily or use as a mouth rinse.

Traditional tea

The same mild preparation may be taken 1–2 times daily for a short period.

The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Pairs well with

For external use it combines with marshmallow or chamomile provided there is no Asteraceae allergy. Lemon balm complements a gentle menstrual tea.

Choose herbs to add together with Calendula flowers.

Precautions

  • Allergic reactions: Avoid with Asteraceae allergy and stop if irritation develops.
  • Medical conditions: Do not apply to deep, infected or extensive wounds or a leg ulcer without professional care.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Avoid internal use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Duration & persistent symptoms: Seek assessment if a wound does not improve within 1 week or mouth inflammation persists.
