Plant mucilage, iridoid glycosides such as aucubin, tannins and flavonoids shape the profile. Central qualities are soothing an irritated throat and dry cough and a gentle astringent profile for digestion and skin.
In European and folk herbal practice, broadleaf plantain is associated with cough, chronic bronchitis and bronchial catarrh and with irritation of the mouth or throat. Its tannins explain traditional use in mild diarrhoea, while older sources also include cystitis with haematuria.
Externally, the leaves were traditionally used for:
as well as minor irritation, abrasions and insect bites.
Use 1.5–3 g of dried leaves in 250 ml of boiling water. Cover, steep for 10–15 minutes and strain. Take 2–3 times daily, keeping the total daily amount at no more than 6 g. For three cups, a practical amount is 1.5–2 g per cup.
Prepare a fresh infusion, strain very thoroughly, allow it to become lukewarm and apply with a clean compress to a small area of intact skin.
The quantities are indicative and based on traditional use and published herbal-medicine literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a healthcare professional.
For throat irritation it is traditionally combined with mallow or marshmallow. For a mild astringent digestive tea it appears with agrimony, and in external care with calendula.
Avoid with plantain allergy. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and use in children require professional guidance. Mucilage may delay medicine absorption, so separate use by about 2 hours. Do not apply to burns, deep wounds or infected lesions. Shortness of breath, fever, purulent or bloody sputum, bloody diarrhoea or dehydration require prompt assessment.
