Borage is traditionally described as demulcent, diuretic, diaphoretic, antiseptic, choleretic, liver-stimulating and appetite-promoting, with references to 'blood cleansing' and adrenal support. Mucilage provides its soothing quality. The dried herb contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs).
Traditional use covers digestive colic, cramps and diarrhoea, as well as:
It also records hypertension, urinary complaints, gravel, kidney stones, urinary infections, pleurisy, fevers and rheumatism. Serious or acute conditions require diagnosis and medical care.
During colds it is chosen for a soothing feel in the throat and its diaphoretic character. Broader herbal tradition additionally includes references to the liver, bile and adrenals, always with short, measured use because of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs).
Add 1–2 g of dried borage herb to 200 ml boiling water, cover for 10 minutes and strain carefully. Drink 1–2 times daily, for short-term use only.
The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
For throat comfort combine with marshmallow or mallow. During a cold, linden or elderflower may be added without increasing the amount of borage.
As a warm, soothing and mildly diaphoretic tea during colds and throat irritation.
Use 1–2 g in 200 ml boiling water, 1–2 times daily and for short-term use only.
Yes; use is therefore limited to a short period, and a batch with written confirmation of compliance with current PA limits is preferred.
