What it is

Blue spirulina is not a different alga but an extract of classic spirulina. Its secret is phycocyanin, a powerful protein-pigment that gives it the intense blue colour and most of its benefits. The colour is not merely striking: it signals antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action, protecting cells and supporting immunity.

Key properties

Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, caffeine-free tonic, hepatoprotective. Its character rests on pure phycocyanin — a phycobiliprotein with documented free-radical scavenging activity. Isolating it is a complex process with low yield, which is why this product is more concentrated and more valuable than green spirulina.

Uses

Who it is for

For low energy and fatigue without caffeine, for immune support, for post-exercise recovery, for detoxification and liver support, in conditions of stress or pollution. It is a vegan source of plant protein, popular with nutritionists, athletes and healthy-living enthusiasts.

Common uses

Daily in smoothies, juices, yoghurt or plant milks. Also used as a natural blue colourant in pastry, ice cream, lattes and cocktails, without synthetic dyes. Its flavour is far more pleasant than classic spirulina — mild and almost neutral.

Key benefits attributed to it

  • Energy and vitality without caffeine. Ideal for anyone wanting a lift without stimulants.
  • Immune support. Phycocyanin is studied in relation to modulation of the immune response.
  • Liver protection. A hepatoprotective profile documented in preclinical models.
  • Anti-inflammatory action. For faster recovery after exercise.
  • Antioxidant protection. Particularly relevant in conditions of stress or pollution.
  • More pleasant taste. Distinctly milder than classic green spirulina, without the strong seaweed odour.

Why it is preferred

Because it delivers phycocyanin in pure form: more potency in a smaller amount, a more pleasant taste and greater ease of use.

Botanical details and nutritional analysis

Scientific name: Arthrospira platensis (Gomont) Geitler

Family: Microcoleaceae (cyanobacteria)

Other names: blue spirulina, phycocyanin, blue majik

Part used: phycocyanin extract from whole spirulina biomass

Characteristic constituents: phycocyanin (phycobiliprotein), plant protein, dietary fibre

Nutrition per 100 g: Energy 1596 kJ / 381.12 kcal · Protein 45.2 g · Fibre 3.91 g · Carbohydrate 46.4 g (of which sugars 0.965 g) · Fat 0.2 g

Historical note: Spirulina was consumed by the Aztecs as "tecuitlatl", harvested from Lake Texcoco and dried into cakes — recorded by the Spanish chronicler Bernal Díaz del Castillo in the 16th century. A parallel tradition exists among the Kanembu around Lake Chad, where "dihé" remains a food to this day.

Preparation and dosage

Powder

1–3 g per day (about 1 teaspoon) in smoothies, juices, yoghurt or plant milks. Ideally in the morning or before intense activity.

Important for colour and action

Phycocyanin is sensitive to heat and acidic pH. Add the powder to cold or lukewarm liquids, not boiling water, so its colour and antioxidant value are preserved.

As a natural colourant

¼ to ½ teaspoon gives an intense blue in 250 ml of plant milk, pastry cream or icing. Combined with a little lemon juice the colour shifts toward purple.

The amounts given are indicative, based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or if you are on medication, consult a qualified health professional.

Precautions

Contraindicated in phenylketonuria (PKU) — phycocyanin is a protein and contains phenylalanine. People with autoimmune conditions or on immunosuppressant therapy should consult a doctor, given its immunomodulatory profile. Caution is required with anticoagulants. Source quality is decisive: cyanobacteria can accumulate heavy metals and microcystins if grown in contaminated waters — always choose tested raw material. Not recommended in pregnancy and breastfeeding without medical advice, due to insufficient data. In hyperuricaemia or gout, moderate use is preferred. Stop use if gastrointestinal discomfort occurs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between blue and green spirulina?

Blue spirulina is an extract of pure phycocyanin from classic spirulina. It delivers the pigment in concentrated form, with a milder, almost neutral taste. Green spirulina is the whole biomass, with a full profile of vitamins, minerals and chlorophyll.

Can I add it to a hot drink?

Better not. Phycocyanin is sensitive to heat and acidic pH: in boiling liquid it loses its colour and part of its antioxidant value. Prefer cold or lukewarm liquids — smoothie, juice, plant milk.

How much do I take per day?

1 to 3 grams, roughly one teaspoon. Ideally in the morning or before intense physical activity.
