What it is

Blackberry leaves make a mildly astringent, earthy tea. Their traditional use is mainly associated with temporary diarrhoea, oral and throat comfort and gentle astringent care.

Key properties

Blackberry leaves are traditionally described as astringent, tonic, restorative, antipyretic, mildly diuretic, diaphoretic and detoxifying. Tannins explain the dry astringent sensation, while flavonoids complement the phytochemical profile.

Uses

Recorded uses of the herb include mild temporary diarrhoea, sore throat and gargling for oral comfort. Traditional literature also records colds, gout and osteoporosis. Blackberry leaves must not be confused with raspberry leaves or used to induce labour.

It is often taken with food when the stomach is sensitive. For gargling, use lukewarm and avoid swallowing large amounts. Persistent diarrhoea, blood, fever or dehydration require prompt assessment.

Preparation & dosage

Herbal tea

Add 1.5–2 g of leaves to 200 ml boiling water, cover for 10–15 minutes and strain. Drink up to 3 times daily for a short period.

Gargle

Use the same infusion lukewarm, 2–3 times daily.

The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Pairs well with

For throat comfort it may be combined with marshmallow or sage. Chamomile may soften the astringent character of the tea.

Choose herbs to add together with Blackberry leaves.

Precautions

  • Adverse effects: Tannins may cause nausea or stomach discomfort; take with food if needed.
  • Medication: Keep at least 2 hours away from medicines and supplements because tannins may reduce absorption.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Never use in pregnancy to induce labour, and avoid medicinal use in pregnancy or breastfeeding without professional advice.

Frequently asked questions

What are blackberry leaves commonly used for?

Tradition uses them for mild temporary diarrhoea and as a lukewarm gargle for the throat and mouth.

Should they be separated from medicines?

Yes. Leave at least 2 hours because tannins may reduce absorption of medicines and supplements.

Are blackberry leaves the same as raspberry leaves?

No. They are different herbal materials, and blackberry leaves are not used to induce labour.
