What it is

Black psyllium is the ripe seed of Plantago indica. On contact with water it swells and forms a gel, supplying soluble, bulk-forming fibre.

Key properties

The seed coat is rich in mucilaginous polysaccharides. They bind water, increase bulk and soften intestinal contents. The same mechanism is associated with satiety and slower absorption of carbohydrates and fats.

Uses

The recognised use of psyllium seed concerns constipation and bowel regularity. Its fibre may also help form more consistent stools in mild diarrhoea and support comfort with haemorrhoids or fissures by reducing the need to strain.

Clinical evidence for psyllium as a fibre category has examined LDL cholesterol, post-meal glucose and satiety. In type 2 diabetes it may contribute to lower glucose, so levels should be monitored alongside antidiabetic medication.

Preparation & dosage

Adults: a total of 12–25 g of whole seeds per day, divided into 3 doses. Use at least 30 ml of water or another aqueous liquid for each 1 g of seed, drink immediately before it thickens, and follow with additional water. Do not take while lying down or immediately before sleep.

Amounts are indicative and based on traditional use and published herbal literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified health professional.

Precautions

Insufficient fluid can cause obstruction in the throat or intestine. Avoid with swallowing difficulty, gastrointestinal narrowing or blockage, unexplained rectal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or a sudden bowel-habit change lasting more than 2 weeks. Separate medicines by 1–2 hours. Monitor glucose when using diabetes medication.

Frequently asked questions

Is black psyllium the same as blond ispaghula?

No. The black psyllium here is Plantago indica, while blond ispaghula usually comes from Plantago ovata.

Why does it need so much water?

The seeds swell rapidly. Adequate liquid is essential for safe movement through the digestive tract.

When does it usually begin to work?

As a bulk-forming fibre it commonly acts within 12–24 hours, although some people may need 2–3 days.

  • Psyllium decreased serum glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin significantly in diabetic outpatients
