What it is

Black hellebore is historically important but highly poisonous. The root is supplied solely as a specialist raw material, not as a household tea, powder or tincture.

Key properties

Older literature uses the terms anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, antioxidant, immunostimulant, antimicrobial, narcotic and purgative. Cardioactive glycosides can strongly affect the heart and nervous system. Helleborus extracts have been studied in vitro in cancer and leukaemia cell lines, including apoptosis and growth inhibition. This research remains mainly preclinical and does not replace medical diagnosis or care.

Uses

Historical uses recorded up to the nineteenth century include:

  • historical sources up to the nineteenth century recorded mania
  • melancholy
  • hypochondria
  • epilepsy
  • emmenagogue use
  • intestinal worms
  • dropsy
  • chronic skin disease

They are not modern directions for use.

Helleborin is caustic and associated with neurological toxicity, while helleborein is purgative and cardioactive. Poisoning may involve vomiting, rhythm disturbance, muscle weakness or paralysis, collapse and oedema. Specialist pharmaceutical use relies only on controlled preparations.

Preparation & dosage

Specialist raw material only

No dose is provided for tea, powder, tincture or household external use. The root is for suitably trained professional handling in a controlled setting only.

The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Combinations with other herbs

No combinations with other herbs are suggested. Its toxicity and cardioactive nature rule out household blends.

Precautions

  • Precaution: Poisonous: oral self-use is prohibited.
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding & age: Absolutely contraindicated in pregnancy, breastfeeding, children, heart disease and with cardiac, diuretic or laxative medicines.
  • Adverse effects: Sap may irritate and redden skin; contact with teeth may cause damage.
  • Precaution: In suspected ingestion, contact a poison centre or emergency medical service immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Can black hellebore root be made into tea?

No. Black hellebore is highly poisonous and this product is supplied only as a specialist raw material.

Why does hellebore appear in herbal history?

Ancient and later traditions recorded many uses, but serious cardiac and neurological toxicity rules out household use.

What should I do if it is swallowed?

Contact a poison centre or seek emergency medical help immediately, even before symptoms appear.
