Basil is traditionally recorded as aromatic, digestive, mildly laxative and diuretic, soothing to mucous membranes and antibacterial. Volatile oil provides its familiar aroma and phenolic compounds its antioxidant profile. This product is dried leaf used in food or tea amounts, not essential oil.
Recorded uses of the herb include:
References also exist to a gentler post-meal glucose rise in type 2 diabetes, without making the leaf a diabetes treatment.
After food it is chosen for digestion, gas or heaviness.
In cooking it is used with tomato, mozzarella, soups, sauces, pesto, minced meat, pasta, rice and pies. Add near the end of cooking to retain aroma. It pairs especially well with tomato and is central to pesto alla Genovese. It has a gently spicy taste.
Use 1/2–1 teaspoon per serving and adjust to the recipe.
Add 1–2 g of leaves to 200 ml boiling water, cover for 5–7 minutes and strain. Drink 1–2 times daily.
The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
In cooking it pairs with oregano, thyme, garlic and tomato. In tea it combines gently with peppermint or fennel for a rounder taste.
Add it near the end of cooking to preserve more of its aroma.
Yes. Use 1–2 g in 200 ml boiling water for 5–7 minutes and take it after food.
No. Ordinary food amounts differ from frequent medicinal use or the much more concentrated essential oil.
