What it is

Alkanet is a perennial Mediterranean plant of the borage family, with a root containing intense red dye. Used for millennia as a natural colouring in cosmetics and soaps, and externally for skin conditions.

Key properties

The root contains alkannin (red pigment), tannins, mucilages and pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). In laboratory and preclinical studies, alkannin and related pigments have been examined for antimicrobial, wound-healing and antioxidant properties.

Uses

Traditionally, alkanet is used externally for:

  • minor wounds
  • eczema
  • acne
  • skin rashes
  • bruises

and as a natural red dye in soaps, lipsticks, infused oils, massage oils and handmade cosmetics.

Internal use is avoided because of pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) content. Older sources recorded internal use for diarrhoea and gastric ulcers, but this product is intended for external use.

Preparation & dosage

Infused oil (external use)

Place 30 g of dried root in 250 ml of carrier oil (olive, sunflower, jojoba). Leave 2–4 weeks in a warm dark place, shaking daily. Strain and store in a dark bottle.

Use in soap (colouring)

1–2 teaspoons of powdered root per 500 g of soap mass. Imparts deep red-purple colour.

⚠️ External use only. Not for consumption.

The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Pairs well with

In soaps & cosmetics: calendula, chamomile, rose. In skin oils: St. John's wort, calendula, chamomile.

Choose herbs to add together with Alkanet root.

Precautions

  • ⚠️ EXTERNAL USE ONLY: Contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), which are hepatotoxic if ingested.
  • Open wounds: Avoid on deep or infected wounds — PAs may be absorbed.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Avoid even external use over large areas.
  • Children: Use only under adult supervision, in small doses (dye in soap).
  • Patch test: Test on a small area for 24 hours before broad application.
  • Contact with clothes & towels: The dye stains intensely — caution with light-coloured fabrics.

Frequently asked questions

Why external use only?

The root contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, substances toxic to the liver when ingested. External use on intact skin is considered safe.

How do I make the classic red oil?

Steep 30 g of root in 250 ml of olive or sunflower oil for 2–4 weeks. The oil takes on a deep red-purple colour, used in handmade cosmetics, soaps and massage oils.

Does the colour hold in soap?

Yes, but it tends to shift from red-purple to grey-purple depending on soap pH. In alkaline cold-process soap the final colour is usually purple-grey; in neutral-pH lotions it stays red.
