What it is

Agrimony is a perennial plant of the rose family, native to meadows and woodlands of Europe, Asia and North America. Traditionally used for digestive disorders, diarrhoea, throat irritation and skin issues.

Key properties

The plant is naturally rich in tannins (up to 8%), flavonoids, bitter compounds, silica, vitamins B1, B3, K. The tannins give the herb its characteristic astringent action. Its full traditional profile includes astringent, diuretic, tissue-healing, bitter-tonic, cholagogue and antiviral properties.

Uses

In traditional European phytotherapy, agrimony has been documented in:

  • mild diarrhoea
  • mucous colitis
  • enteritis
  • oropharyngeal inflammation (pharyngitis
  • laryngitis
  • hoarseness)
  • skin rashes
  • minor wounds
  • burns

Traditionally appreciated in wellness routines focused on tonifying irritated tissue, supporting the voice and providing mild anti-inflammatory action. Depending on the need, it is used internally, as a gargle or externally.

Broader traditional references include childhood diarrhoea, anaemia, rheumatism, lumbago, liver and spleen complaints, tonsillitis, mouth ulcers, fungal complaints, cystitis, urinary incontinence and kidney stones. Use in children and chronic conditions requires individual professional guidance.

Preparation & dosage

Infusion

2–4 g of dried herb (approx. 1 heaped teaspoon) per cup of hot water. Cover and steep 10–15 minutes. Drink 2–3 times daily.

Gargle (for pharyngitis / hoarseness)

Stronger infusion (5 g in 150 ml), lukewarm, gargle 3–4 times daily.

External compresses

Infusion 5 g in 250 ml as cold compresses on the affected area 2–3 times daily.

The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Pairs well with

For digestion: combines with chamomile, lemon balm, peppermint. For voice/pharyngitis: with marshmallow, mallow, sage. For skin: externally with calendula, witch hazel.

Choose herbs to add together with Agrimony herb.

Precautions

  • Constipation: Strong astringent properties may worsen constipation — avoid in susceptible individuals.
  • Drug interaction: Tannins may reduce drug absorption, especially alkaloids and iron — space 2 hours apart.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Insufficient safety data — avoid.
  • Children: Under 12, use only with medical advice.
  • Persistent diarrhoea: Over 3 days requires medical evaluation.
  • When to seek advice: Consult a healthcare professional if diarrhoea persists for more than 3 days or mouth, throat or skin symptoms for more than 1 week.
  • Appendicitis: Older sources mention agrimony in this context, but appendicitis is a medical emergency.
  • When to seek advice: Any suspicion requires prompt medical assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Why the traditional link to singers?

In Greek folk tradition, singers, preachers and orators used it as a gargle to clear and strengthen the voice — hence the traditional name.

How does it compare to other astringents?

Agrimony balances astringent and bitter actions, making it suitable for irritated digestion with looseness. Other astringents (e.g. witch hazel) are more specific for skin and vascular issues.

Can I take it daily?

As a wellness infusion, it may be consumed daily for 2–3 weeks. For long-term use, take breaks (e.g. 3 weeks on, 1 off).
