What it is

A combination of organic Greek spirulina from Serres and bee pollen, in 90 tablets. Two complete natural foods in one tablet, with constituents for energy and vitality, for immunity, for metabolism and for antioxidant protection.

Bee pollen is collected from the flowering meadows and untouched woodlands of the Greek countryside. The bee gathers pollen and nectar, coats them with a secretion from its salivary glands and turns them into a firm pellet, which it deposits in the hive cells. There it is fermented by yeasts and beneficial bacteria such as Bifidus lactobacilli. The result is never exactly the same, because it depends on the plants the bees visit, the season and the climatic conditions.

Key properties

The combination works as a tonic and replenisher, with an antioxidant and immune-supporting direction. Spirulina is a blue-green alga with protein up to 70%, phycocyanin, iron and a broad spectrum of vitamins. Bee pollen is the food the bee deposits in the hive, also known as "bee bread". It contains mainly carbohydrates (40–60%, chiefly fructose and glucose), proteins (about 35%, range 20–60%), little fat (about 5%, range 1–32%), moisture 4–10% and 5–15% other constituents such as vitamins, trace elements, flavonoids, carotenoids, glutathione and quercetin.

Composition

  • Protein up to 70%, providing all amino acids including the essential ones — isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, valine
  • Vitamins: provitamin A (beta-carotene), B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6, B12 (cobalamin), vitamin E
  • Minerals and trace elements: calcium, iron, manganese, zinc, magnesium, copper, chromium, selenium
  • Fats: gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), sulpholipids
  • Antioxidants: phycocyanin, carotenoids, xanthophylls
  • Sulphated polysaccharides
  • Contains no iodine

Uses

Who it is for

In fatigue and low energy, in periods of pressure and stress, for interest in metabolism and weight, in reduced defences, and in postmenopausal discomfort.

Its usual uses

  • Energy, stamina and sport. It provides high levels of energy and stamina and has a positive effect on athlete physiology, which is why it is extremely popular in sport. A study has examined ergogenic and antioxidant effects in humans.
  • Immunity and inflammation. It strengthens the immune system and helps prevent infections and inflammation. Studies have examined natural killer cell activity and the anti-inflammatory action of C-phycocyanin.
  • Iron and anaemia. High levels of iron and other trace elements help prevent deficiencies and anaemia. A published study has examined the effect of spirulina on anaemia and immune function in senior citizens.
  • Metabolism, weight and detoxification. It helps with the loss of excess weight by supporting metabolism and contributes to the elimination of toxins.
  • Blood sugar and lipids. Research has examined the role of spirulina in the control of glycaemia and lipidaemia in type 2 diabetes, as well as hypolipidaemic and antihypertensive effects in population studies.
  • Mental performance and older adults. It increases performance at work and study and improves quality of life in older adults.
  • Bee pollen and antioxidant action. The scientific literature reports animal studies on the antioxidant capacity of bee pollen, that is the scavenging of free radicals that oxidise cellular components, as well as a positive effect on chronic inflammation and localised anti-inflammatory actions.
  • Bee pollen, cholesterol and liver. A possible positive effect on cholesterol management and liver function is reported, along with antimicrobial and wound-healing action and improved metabolic activity, particularly in relation to the absorption and assimilation of iron and calcium.
  • Bee pollen and menopause. A study in middle-aged women showed benefits in postmenopausal discomfort such as hot flushes, flushing, changes in mood and energy, and joint pain.

Preparation & dosage

Tablets
Take with plenty of water, in one or two doses before midday. Follow the indication on the packaging, as the ratio of spirulina to bee pollen determines the daily amount. New users are advised to start with a small quantity and increase gradually.

Quantities are indicative, based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or if you are on medication, consult a healthcare professional.

Combinations with other herbs

It combines naturally with chlorella in detox programmes and with honey or royal jelly in tonic blends.

Precautions

The product contains a bee product. It is avoided by those with allergy to pollen or bee products, as reactions can be serious. Spirulina is a food and not a medicine. Even so, specialist advice is needed in autoimmune conditions, because it stimulates the immune system, and with immunosuppressive or anticoagulant medication. It is avoided in phenylketonuria, because of its phenylalanine content. In pregnancy and breastfeeding, consultation with the treating physician comes first. At the start of use mild digestive discomfort may occur, so a gradual increase in quantity and adequate water intake are recommended.

Frequently asked questions

What is bee pollen?

It is the pollen and nectar the bee collects and deposits, fermented, in the hive, also known as "bee bread".

How does it differ from plain spirulina?

Bee pollen adds flavonoids, carotenoids, quercetin and glutathione, as well as its own carbohydrate and protein profile.

Who should avoid it?

Those with allergy to pollen or bee products, as reactions can be serious.
