Organic powder from Schisandra chinensis berries, one of the classic adaptogenic herbs of the Chinese tradition. Chosen for anxiety and fatigue, for stamina and mental clarity, for liver protection and as an anti-ageing tonic. Women in China have traditionally used them in their diet to maintain their youthful vigour.
Key properties
Schisandra has adaptogenic properties, meaning it helps the body resist the effects of stress and strengthens its defences against illness. Its most characteristic direction is the protective effect on the liver, through stimulating the cells that produce antioxidants. It also acts as a mild calmative and as a stamina tonic. The characteristic constituents of the berry seeds are the lignans, the best known being schisandrin.
Uses
Who it is for
In anxiety, stress and fatigue, under increased work and concentration demands, for interest in liver function and detoxification, in menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes and sweating, and in reduced libido.
Its usual uses
- Anxiety, stress and fatigue. The adaptogenic properties of the berries make them among the most widespread herbs for countering anxiety and fatigue, helping the body respond to stressful situations.
- Liver and detoxification. Lignans protect the liver by stimulating the cells that produce antioxidants. Extensive modern studies are being conducted on their use in hepatitis. Reduced liver function is linked with reduced fat metabolism and incomplete detoxification, conditions that make maintaining a healthy weight harder.
- Mental clarity and reflexes. They are considered enhancers of mental clarity and ideal for improving reflexes and work performance. Research has examined schisandrin B in cell models of Alzheimer disease.
- Mood and nervous system. They act as a mild calmative and antidepressant. A study has examined the effect of extracts on the noradrenergic, dopaminergic, GABAergic and glutamatergic systems. Traditionally they are also used for protection from central nervous system conditions.
- Menopause. A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial has examined Schisandra chinensis in menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, sweating and palpitations.
- Stamina, anti-ageing and libido. For thousands of years the berries have been considered excellent anti-ageing and stamina tonics, and are also used to enhance libido.
- Heart, blood pressure and infections. Tradition reports action for protection from cardiovascular conditions, against low blood pressure, influenza and the after-effects of alcohol. In Chinese medicine they are used for resistance to infections, for skin health, for insomnia and for persistent cough.
Preparation & dosage
Powder
The product instruction for the adaptogenic properties is 1.5 to 6 g per day, that is from half a teaspoon to one tablespoon. It dissolves in water, juice, a smoothie or yoghurt.
Drink from whole berries
Soak the berries overnight, squeeze them in the morning and simmer them in fresh water for about 20 minutes, so that their constituents are extracted.
Quantities are indicative, based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or if you are on medication, consult a healthcare professional.
Combinations with other herbs
In the Chinese tradition it is combined with ginseng and rhodiola in tonic and stamina blends. For liver support it is accompanied by milk thistle. Quantities need adjustment by a specialist.
Precautions
Excessively high quantities may lead to gastric discomfort such as heartburn. For this reason schisandra may not be suitable in ulcer, gastro-oesophageal reflux or hyperchlorhydria. It may also cause reduced appetite. It may not be suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women, so discussion with a doctor comes first. Allergic reactions such as itching or skin rash have been reported.
