Organic powder from the Ganoderma lucidum mushroom, one of the most recognised medicinal mushrooms of the East. Chosen for the immune system, for stress and insomnia, as an adaptogen and tonic, and in detox programmes. The powder offers a simple way of daily use, in soups, risotto, mushroom recipes or juice.
Key properties
Ganoderma is described as an adaptogen and tonic, with an anti-inflammatory character and a calming effect on the nervous system. Its main research field is the immunomodulatory direction. Its characteristic constituents are complex sugar molecules, the polysaccharides and specifically the beta-D-glucans formed in the mushroom cell walls, as well as the triterpenes. Beta-glucans are studied for their relationship with the activity of macrophages, the large white blood cells, while triterpenes are linked to the anti-inflammatory and calming character.
Uses
Who it is for
In periods of reduced defences and repeated infections, in stress and difficulty sleeping, in inflammatory states and allergic reactions, in respiratory discomfort, and in programmes aimed at eliminating toxins.
Its usual uses
- Immune system. Polysaccharides and particularly beta-D-glucans are the main field of research. They are studied in relation to macrophage activity and white blood cell function.
- Stress, anxiety and insomnia. This is among its most consistent traditional uses. Triterpenes are associated with a calming effect on the nervous system. A controlled study with a polysaccharide extract examined neurasthenia.
- Oncology research. Ganoderma has for decades been the subject of extensive research in oncology. Studies have examined the action of its polysaccharides on cancer cells and their use as a complementary means in patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The data remain research-stage and do not replace any medical treatment.
- Inflammation, asthma and allergies. Triterpenes have an anti-inflammatory character and are examined in relation to symptoms of asthma and other respiratory discomfort, as well as histamine release.
- Detoxification. Traditional use attributes to reishi a contribution to the elimination of harmful toxins from the body.
- DNA, ageing and skin. There is research interest in protection from DNA damage and from ultraviolet radiation, with an association with slower skin ageing.
- Blood sugar and metabolism. Preclinical studies have examined the effect of ganoderma polysaccharides on glucose levels in type 2 diabetes models.
- Liver and viral infections. Research has also turned to its relationship with hepatitis and viral infections, at an early stage.
Preparation & dosage
Powder
The product instruction is up to 2 g, about one teaspoon, twice a day. Add to soups, risotto, any mushroom recipe, juice or a warm drink. The taste is markedly bitter, so it is usually blended with other ingredients rather than taken on its own.
Duration
Some specialists recommend that daily use lasts one month, followed by a break. See the precautions.
Quantities are indicative, based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or if you are on medication, consult a healthcare professional.
Combinations with other herbs
It combines naturally with other medicinal mushrooms such as maitake and shiitake in immune support blends. In relaxing drinks it is accompanied by chamomile or linden. Quantities need adjustment by a specialist.
Precautions
Cases of liver injury have been reported in association with reishi extract after months of use. For this reason daily use is limited to cycles, usually one month followed by a break. It is avoided by pregnant and breastfeeding women and by those with blood disorders. Because of a possible effect on clotting, specialist advice is needed with anticoagulant medication and before surgery. Caution is required with antihypertensive and antidiabetic treatment.
