Organic Mucuna pruriens seed powder from India, a herb used in Ayurvedic medicine for over two thousand years. It is a natural source of levodopa (L-dopa), a precursor of dopamine. Chosen for the nervous system, mood, libido and the reproductive system. Its taste is sweet and bitter, with a warming character.
Key properties
The characteristic constituent is levodopa (L-dopa), which is converted to dopamine in the body. This is precisely what makes the herb both potent and demanding in use: it is not a neutral supplement and it interacts with important classes of medication. In the Ayurvedic tradition it is described as a building and rejuvenating herb that promotes an increase in muscle mass and body weight, acting mainly on the nervous, reproductive and digestive systems.
Uses
Who it is for
For interest in nervous system support and motor function, in periods of anxiety and low mood, in reduced libido, and in muscle-building programmes. It is intended for adults who have read the precautions carefully.
Its usual uses
- Nervous system and motor function. It supports a healthy central and peripheral nervous system. The majority of research on Mucuna pruriens concerns its possible use in Parkinson disease, with a published double-blind clinical and pharmacological study. This is a medical field, not a self-management use.
- Balance, posture and coordination. Traditional use attributes support of natural balance and posture, as well as motor skills and coordination.
- Anxiety and mood. It supports the ability of the body to handle stress. Many seek mucuna as a herb of antidepressant character, because of the relationship of levodopa with dopamine.
- Libido and reproductive system. Traditionally it rejuvenates both the male and the female reproductive system and is used to support libido. It is also sought as a supplement in relation to testosterone.
- Muscle mass, energy and stamina. As a building herb it promotes an increase in muscle mass and body weight, while improving energy and stamina.
- Intellect. Ayurvedic use reports support of the intellect and mental function.
- Blood sugar. There is research interest in Indian plants with antidiabetic potential, which includes Mucuna pruriens.
Preparation & dosage
Powder
The product instruction is half a teaspoon, once or twice a day, or as directed by your doctor. It is taken with water, milk, ghee, honey or juice. The powder offers the full taste experience of the herb and is its most economical form.
Given the levodopa content, exceeding the quantity offers no benefit and increases the likelihood of adverse effects.
Quantities are indicative, based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or if you are on medication, consult a healthcare professional.
Combinations with other herbs
In the Ayurvedic tradition it is accompanied by ashwagandha, shatavari or ginger. Because of the levodopa content, combinations need specialist guidance and should not be improvised.
Precautions
Mucuna pruriens contains levodopa and its precautions are substantial.
In combination with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), levodopa may cause high blood pressure. It must also be avoided by people with psychosis or schizophrenia.
Because of possible additive effects or interactions, it is used with particular caution and only after medical advice with levodopa, dopamine, dopamine agonists or antagonists, dopamine reuptake inhibitors, antidepressants, antidiabetics and anticoagulants, as well as in diabetes.
It is used with caution in pregnancy and breastfeeding, because it may affect prolactin secretion. Avoid in known allergies to Mucuna pruriens, its constituents or other members of the Fabaceae family, and in states of high concentration, congestion or acute conditions.
In clinical studies with seed powder few adverse effects have been reported, mostly mild and gastrointestinal in nature. If you take prescription medication of any kind, consult your doctor or practitioner before starting.
