Organic whole cocoa beans 150 g

Whole cocoa beans from organic cultivation in Peru. Not a powder — the fruit itself, as it comes off the tree after fermentation and drying. They are eaten like a nut, broken into nibs, or ground at home.

Properties & actions

  • Heart muscle and blood pressure. Cocoa beans may increase the strength of the heart muscle and regulate blood pressure.
  • Clots and stroke. They are associated with reducing blood clotting and the likelihood of clots and strokes.
  • Arteries and veins. They help reduce the symptoms and risk of hardening of the arteries and veins.
  • Menstrual pain. A contribution to painful menstrual muscle contractions is reported.
  • Anxiety and stress. They reduce anxiety and increase the capacity to cope with stress.
  • Antioxidants. Cocoa contains more antioxidants than red wine, and than fruits known for their antioxidant properties such as pomegranate and blueberries.
  • Flavonoids and procyanidins. A high content of these compounds, which block the action of free radicals — the action responsible for ageing.
  • Magnesium. It contains plenty of magnesium, which protects the heart, brain, bones, muscles and blood. Also iron and vitamin C.
  • Tiredness and drowsiness. Thanks to magnesium, phosphorus and theobromine, cocoa drives away tiredness and drowsiness.
  • Mood. It improves mood, thanks to the tryptophan in the beans, which supports serotonin production.

What it contains

  • Whole cocoa beans (Theobroma cacao), fermented and dried
  • Rich in flavonoids, procyanidins and antioxidants
  • Magnesium, iron, vitamin C, phosphorus
  • Theobromine and tryptophan
  • Organically grown in Peru (VIOYGEIA). Pack 150 g.

Taste & texture

Very bitter, astringent and intensely aromatic, with fruity and sour notes that processed powder loses. The texture is crunchy and fatty at once. It is a taste that takes getting used to — it does not resemble chocolate.

Where it fits

Plain, a few beans as a snack. Broken over yoghurt, oats, granola and ice cream, where they add crunch. In energy balls with dates and nuts. Ground, for a fresh cocoa drink.

How to use

Eaten whole, like a nut — a few beans at a time. They break easily into nibs with a knife or in a mortar.

Grind in a coffee grinder for fresh cocoa powder, with an aroma that ready-made powder does not have.

The husk comes off easily with the fingers after light warming in a pan.

Precautions & storage

Whole beans have a higher concentration of theobromine and caffeine than powder — take care with evening consumption and with sensitivity to stimulants.

Toxic to pets, particularly dogs. They contain oxalates: moderation with a history of kidney stones.

Because of the effect on clotting, with anticoagulant medication consult your physician first. Store in a cool, dry place.
