What it is

Organic barley grass powder, 125 g from Slovenia. It is the leaf from the young shoots of the barley plant and has been studied extensively for its beneficial effects. Chosen for detoxification, for dietary fibre and digestion, for blood sugar levels, for bones and joints and for antioxidant protection.

Key properties

Barley grass is described as a tonic and detoxifier, with an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory direction and a characteristic contribution to digestion and gut function. Dried barley grass is a major source of dietary fibre, with almost 3 grams per tablespoon. It is high in magnesium, a component of chlorophyll and the fourth most common mineral in the body, which is a key part of more than three hundred enzyme reactions and is particularly important for energy production and glucose control. It is also rich in vitamins A and C, which act as antioxidants, in vitamin K, essential for blood clotting and bone formation, and in polyphenols and flavonoids.

Uses

Who it is for

In detoxification and weight management programmes, in digestive disturbances and colitis, when watching blood sugar levels and cholesterol, for interest in bones and joints, and in periods of low energy.

Its usual uses

  • Tone, energy and immunity. Barley grass acts as a tonic and its consumption may help tone the immune system and the body, increasing energy and stamina.
  • Antioxidant protection and anti-ageing. Vitamins A and C help counter free radicals, while polyphenols and flavonoids act to reduce oxidative stress and protect against chronic conditions. It is also a source of the anti-ageing enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD), which supports a healthy inflammatory response.
  • Digestion, gut and fibre. It is a major source of dietary fibre, promotes better digestion and helps with digestive disturbances and colitis.
  • Detoxification and weight. It acts as a detoxifier and may help with weight management alongside a balanced diet.
  • Blood sugar. Some studies suggest that barley grass could help maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Magnesium is particularly important for glucose control.
  • Heart and cholesterol. It may support heart health by keeping cholesterol levels lower.
  • Bones and joints. The calcium it contains, combined with phosphorus, relates to the health of bones and teeth, while vitamin K is linked to bone formation.
  • Alkalinity, clarity and skin. Traditional use reports support of healthy internal alkalinity, of mental health and clear thinking, and of the structural building blocks in hair, skin and nails.

Preparation & dosage

Powder
The product instruction is up to 3 teaspoons per day, in water, juice or tea. Absorption is best on an empty stomach.

The powder can be added to juices, smoothies and protein drinks. Try it in the blender with blueberries, banana or plant milk.

Quantities are indicative, based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or if you are on medication, consult a healthcare professional.

Combinations with other herbs

It is often combined with other ingredients in green blends, such as alfalfa, spirulina and wheatgrass. In drinks it pairs with apple, lemon or mint.

Precautions

Those taking anticoagulants such as warfarin should keep their vitamin K intake stable, so as not to interfere with the effects of these medicines. The high fibre content may initially cause bloating, so a gradual increase in quantity and adequate water intake are recommended. In pregnancy and breastfeeding, advice from a healthcare professional comes first.
