Nettle tincture is a liquid hydroalcoholic extract of Urtica dioica. In liquid form the sting of the fresh plant disappears entirely.
Main properties
The herb contains flavonoids, chlorophyll, mineral salts and phenolic acids. Tradition describes them as diuretic, tonic, astringent and blood forming, with anti-inflammatory interest.
Uses
The tincture is used for mild water retention, oedema and increased urinary flow, and as traditional support around uric acid, gout and osteoarthritis. Folk practice links the herb with anaemia and blood formation, nosebleeds, allergic rhinitis, eczema and childhood eczema. Externally, a cool well-strained tincture is traditionally used as a final rinse for hair loss and dandruff.
How to use & dosage
1–4 ml of tincture three times a day, diluted in a little water. (1 ml ≈ 30 drops)
Indicative amounts drawn from herbal reference literature. They are not the producer's directions. Always check the product label. For prolonged use, or if you are taking medication, consult a health professional.
Combinations with other herbs
For a flushing tea, pair with dandelion leaf or birch leaf. Ginger suits a joint-focused drink. For hair, rosemary may be added after a small skin test.
Precautions
- Contains alcohol: Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for children, for people with liver disease or epilepsy, or for those abstaining from alcohol. May interact with disulfiram and metronidazole. Always take diluted in a little water or juice.
- Storage: Keep in a cool, dark place, out of reach of children. Shake before use.
Do not use for flushing when fluids are medically restricted because of serious heart or kidney disease. Seek advice with diuretics, blood-pressure or diabetes medicines, or lithium. Blood in urine, an acute gout attack, persistent bleeding or symptoms of anaemia require assessment. Data are insufficient for therapeutic use during pregnancy, breastfeeding and under 12 years.
