Milk thistle tincture is a liquid hydroalcoholic extract of Silybum marianum. The plant gives up little in a hot drink, whereas alcohol extracts it far more efficiently and yields a ready liquid form.
Key properties
Milk thistle is traditionally described as galactagogue, liver-cell restorative, bile-secretion stimulating, demulcent, antidepressant and antioxidant. Silymarin is characteristic mainly of the herb; the aerial herb has a different content and profile, so the product form must always be considered. Older phytotherapy literature also records diuretic, antirheumatic, laxative, tonic and detoxifying properties.
Uses
Traditionally, the herb has been used for:
- liver support after exposure to toxins or medicines
- fatty infiltration
- alcohol-related cirrhosis
- hepatitis
Increased milk production, bile stimulation, gallbladder complaints and gallstones are also recorded. Liver and biliary disease require medical supervision. Traditional and commercial literature also includes the terms cholesterol, uric acid and gout.
The herb may also be added to food. Human clinical research on silymarin has mainly been conducted with specific extracts.
How to use & dosage
1–2 ml of tincture three times a day, diluted in a little water. (1 ml ≈ 30 drops)
Indicative amounts drawn from herbal reference literature. They are not the producer's directions. Always check the product label. For prolonged use, or if you are taking medication, consult a health professional.
Pairs well with
For digestive comfort combine with artichoke or dandelion if gallstones and bile-duct obstruction are absent. Peppermint can make the taste more pleasant.
Precautions
- Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Despite its traditional galactagogue reputation, available evidence is insufficient for an absolute assurance of safety; therefore use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only after professional advice.
- Allergies & sensitivities: Avoid with Asteraceae allergy.
- Medical conditions: Gallstones, bile-duct obstruction or serious liver disease require guidance.
- Allergic reactions: Nausea, diarrhoea or allergy may occur.
- Contains alcohol: Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for children, for people with liver disease or epilepsy, or for those abstaining from alcohol. May interact with disulfiram and metronidazole. Always take diluted in a little water or juice.
- Storage: Keep in a cool, dark place, out of reach of children. Shake before use.
Frequently asked questions
Which form of silymarin has been studied most?
Human clinical research has mainly used specific silymarin extracts.
How is the tincture taken?
Always diluted in a little water or juice, never neat. Shake the bottle before each use.
Why a tincture rather than the ground herb?
A hydroalcoholic extract renders milk thistle in a ready liquid form that can be dosed in drops, with no grinding or preparation.
