Mucilage, tannins, silicic acid and phenolic compounds give the herb its soothing and astringent character. The central properties concern soothing an irritated throat and cough and supporting the clearance of thick mucus.
Lungwort was traditionally used for:
Historical literature also includes chronic bronchitis, whooping cough and asthma, while the mucilage is associated with a soothing feel in sore throat.
Older records also mention diarrhoea, particularly in children, and external applications for eczema, haemorrhoids, wounds and burns. Evidence for these uses remains mainly traditional.
30 drops in a little water, up to three times a day.
Amounts follow the producer's own directions. For prolonged use, or if you are taking medication, consult a health professional.
For a soothing tea it is traditionally combined with mallow, marshmallow or plantain. Combinations are kept to short-term use and conservative amounts.
A batch with documented pyrrolizidine-alkaloid testing is preferable. Internal use is limited to adults and no longer than 2 weeks. Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding, in children, liver disease and with medicines or substances that may burden the liver. Yellowing of the skin, dark urine, upper-right abdominal pain or marked fatigue require immediate discontinuation and medical assessment. Persistent cough or breathlessness, fever, chest pain or blood in sputum require examination.
Levels can vary considerably between batches, so tested raw material is preferable and prolonged use is avoided.
When cough or breathlessness persists or is accompanied by fever, chest pain, blood in sputum or signs of liver stress.
The name comes from the old doctrine of signatures: the spotted leaves resembled lung tissue. It is a historical name, not a description of action.
