What it is

100% pure organic Greek spirulina from Nigrita in Serres, in 120 tablets. It is one of the most popular supplements in the world, full of nutrients and antioxidants. Chosen for energy and stamina, for immunity, for iron and anaemia and for metabolism. The tablets give a consistent amount and convenience, without the taste of the powder.

Spirulina complements the daily diet with its nutrients and makes up for the consequences of an unbalanced diet, whether this is due to poor choices or to a demanding and stressful way of life. Its reserves of antioxidants and vitamins naturally replenish an insufficient intake of fruit and vegetables.

Key properties

Spirulina works as a whole food and tonic, with an antioxidant and immune-supporting direction and a characteristic contribution to replenishing iron and protein. It is a type of blue-green algae, rich in nutrients, with B-complex vitamins, beta-carotene and vitamin E. Its characteristic compounds are phycocyanin, the pigment that gives the algae their blue colour, chlorophyll, minerals and antioxidants.

Composition

  • Protein up to 70%, providing all amino acids including the essential ones — isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, valine
  • Vitamins: provitamin A (beta-carotene), B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6, B12 (cobalamin), vitamin E
  • Minerals and trace elements: calcium, iron, manganese, zinc, magnesium, copper, chromium, selenium
  • Fats: gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), sulpholipids
  • Antioxidants: phycocyanin, carotenoids, xanthophylls
  • Sulphated polysaccharides
  • Contains no iodine

Uses

Who it is for

In fatigue and low energy, in sport and intensive training, in low iron and anaemia, in periods of reduced defences, in diets with limited intake of fruit and vegetables, and in older age.

Its usual uses

  • Energy, stamina and sport. It provides high levels of energy and stamina and has a positive effect on athlete physiology, which is why it is extremely popular in sport. A study has examined ergogenic and antioxidant effects in humans.
  • Immunity and inflammation. It strengthens the immune system and helps prevent infections and inflammation. Studies have examined natural killer cell activity and the anti-inflammatory action of C-phycocyanin.
  • Iron and anaemia. High levels of iron and other trace elements help prevent deficiencies and anaemia. A published study has examined the effect of spirulina on anaemia and immune function in senior citizens.
  • Metabolism, weight and detoxification. It helps with the loss of excess weight by supporting metabolism and contributes to the elimination of toxins.
  • Blood sugar and lipids. Research has examined the role of spirulina in the control of glycaemia and lipidaemia in type 2 diabetes, as well as hypolipidaemic and antihypertensive effects in population studies.
  • Mental performance and older adults. It increases performance at work and study and improves quality of life in older adults.
  • Women. It supports women during menstruation, pregnancy, breastfeeding and menopause, always in consultation with the treating physician.
  • Skin, hair and recovery. It helps maintain the good condition of skin and hair and strengthens the body during recovery from illness or surgery.
  • Kidney and intestinal function. It has a positive effect on kidney and intestinal function and provides tone in periods of pressure and stress.

Preparation & dosage

Tablets
The manufacturer instruction is, for adults, 4 to 10 tablets per day depending on body type and age, with plenty of water, in one or two doses before midday. For children the instruction is 3 to 6 tablets per day, under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Athletes may increase quantities according to their needs, under guidance.

Spirulina is a food that is simply pressed into tablets, so there is no strict upper intake limit beyond the satiety the user perceives in case of overconsumption.

Quantities are indicative, based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or if you are on medication, consult a healthcare professional.

Combinations with other herbs

It combines naturally with chlorella in detox programmes and with wheatgrass or barley grass in green blends. Vitamin C from the diet helps iron absorption.

Precautions

Spirulina is a food and not a medicine. Even so, specialist advice is needed in autoimmune conditions, because it stimulates the immune system, and with immunosuppressive or anticoagulant medication. It is avoided in phenylketonuria, because of its phenylalanine content. In pregnancy and breastfeeding, consultation with the treating physician comes first. At the start of use mild digestive discomfort may occur, so a gradual increase in quantity and adequate water intake are recommended.

Frequently asked questions

How many spirulina tablets per day?

The manufacturer instruction is 4 to 10 tablets for adults, depending on body type and age, in one or two doses before midday.

No. This spirulina contains no iodine.
