Graviola tincture is a liquid hydroalcoholic extract of Annona muricata leaves. It delivers the leaf's acetogenins and flavonoids in drops.
Key properties
The leaves contain polyphenols, alkaloids and Annonaceae acetogenins, including annonacin. Laboratory studies have examined antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of their extracts.
Uses
Traditional use in tropical regions associates the leaves with digestive comfort and gastrointestinal parasites, blood pressure, glucose and metabolic balance, as well as catarrh, asthma, joints, liver, nervous tension and mood. Evidence for these uses remains mainly ethnobotanical or preclinical.
Laboratory and animal studies have examined graviola leaf extracts in relation to cancer cells, with the research remaining preclinical.
How to use & dosage
Follow the directions for use and dosage printed on the product label.
Precautions
- Contains alcohol: Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for children, for people with liver disease or epilepsy, or for those abstaining from alcohol. May interact with disulfiram and metronidazole. Always take diluted in a little water or juice.
- Storage: Keep in a cool, dark place, out of reach of children. Shake before use.
Avoid during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in children, and with Parkinson disease or other movement-related neurological disorders. Prolonged or high exposure to acetogenins such as annonacin has been associated with neurotoxic risk. Graviola may lower blood pressure or glucose, so monitoring is required with antihypertensive or antidiabetic medicines. Stop use if tremor, unusual rigidity, neurological symptoms or marked gastrointestinal discomfort occurs.
Frequently asked questions
Why should continuous long-term use be avoided?
The leaves contain acetogenins, and high or prolonged exposure should be avoided because of potential neurotoxic risk.
How is the tincture taken?
Always diluted in a little water or juice, never neat. Shake the bottle before each use.
How does it differ from graviola leaf powder?
The powder is the ground leaf, used as a tea. The tincture is a concentrated liquid extract in an alcohol base, taken in drops.
The available research is mainly at a preclinical stage.
