Traditional literature describes eyebright as strongly anticatarrhal, astringent, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. Tannins explain its astringency, while iridoids and flavonoids have been explored in laboratory studies. Eyebright is historically associated with conjunctivitis, stye, blepharitis, irritated eyes and eye infection, mainly as an external compress over closed eyelids. These references describe traditional use, not a proven treatment for an eye disorder.
Recorded uses of the herb include:
Persistent pain, discharge, light sensitivity, blurred vision or suspected eye infection requires ophthalmic assessment.
Its name is etymologically linked with cheerfulness. Tradition also records an external compress over closed eyelids. The liquid is not used as an eye wash and is not instilled into the eye.
Use 1/2 teaspoon, about 1 g, in 200 ml boiling water. Cover for 10–15 minutes, strain carefully and drink up to 3 times daily for a short period.
The traditional reference concerns a compress over closed eyelids. No homemade eye-wash recipe is supplied, and the liquid is not instilled into the eye.
The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
For catarrh it is traditionally combined with elderflower, for the throat with marshmallow and for a mild aromatic tea with spearmint.
Tradition records external compresses over closed eyelids for mild discomfort and tired eyes. This is not an eye wash or eye-drop preparation.
Yes. It is traditionally used as a mild tea for nasal catarrh, sinus discomfort, cough and sore throat.
