Echinacea tincture is a liquid hydroalcoholic extract of Echinacea. Alcohol carries the alkylamides, which also produce the characteristic tingling on the tongue.
Key properties
Traditional literature describes echinacea as immune stimulating, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antiviral, detoxifying, diaphoretic, healing and antiallergenic. Alkamides, polysaccharides and phenolic acids account for interest in immune modulation and antioxidant protection. Laboratory and preclinical studies have examined blood glucose, inflammation, skin and cancer cell lines, while limited human clinical research has examined anxiety.
Uses
Recorded uses of the herb include:
- common cold
- flu
- viral illness
- sinusitis
- pharyngitis
- laryngitis
- sore throat
- respiratory infection
Broader tradition includes urinary and fungal infection, candidiasis, allergic rhinitis, acne, boils, chilblains, cold sores, eczema, skin hydration and wrinkles, mild asthma, earache, canker sores, pyorrhoea and gingivitis.
Use is usually started at the first signs of a cold and remains short term. Skin, anxiety and metabolic markers are fields of laboratory, preclinical or limited clinical research.
How to use & dosage
1–4 ml of tincture three times a day, diluted in a little water. (1 ml ≈ 30 drops)
Indicative amounts drawn from herbal reference literature. They are not the producer's directions. Always check the product label. For prolonged use, or if you are taking medication, consult a health professional.
Combinations with other herbs
For a cold it combines with elderflower or thyme, and for the throat with marshmallow. Avoid indiscriminate blends containing numerous additional immune-stimulating herbs.
