Dandelion tincture is a liquid hydroalcoholic extract of Taraxacum officinale. It keeps the plant's pronounced bitterness, the hallmark of bitter tonic herbs.
Main properties
The herb contains inulin, bitter lactones, phenolic acids and triterpenes. Traditional herbal practice describes it as a bitter tonic, cholagogue, mild diuretic and gentle laxative, with an affinity for digestion, liver and bile function and normal fluid elimination.
Uses
Dandelion tincture is traditionally used for heaviness after food, slow digestion, reduced appetite and mild constipation. Its cholagogue tradition explains historical links with liver or gallbladder congestion and inflammation, cholesterol, congestive jaundice and detoxification. These terms describe historical use and are not directions for self-treating serious disease.
The broader dandelion tradition also includes water retention, oedema, lymphatic flow, cellulite and muscular or rheumatic discomfort. The herb is selected for its digestive, bitter profile, while the herb is usually preferred for stronger urinary-flushing use. Research also examines possible effects on lipids and metabolism.
How to use & dosage
5–10 ml of tincture three times a day, diluted in a little water. (1 ml ≈ 30 drops)
Indicative amounts drawn from herbal reference literature. They are not the producer's directions. Always check the product label. For prolonged use, or if you are taking medication, consult a health professional.
Combinations with other herbs
For digestion, combine with artichoke, milk thistle or ginger. For a gentler fluid-elimination blend, it can be paired with nettle leaf when there is no medical need to restrict fluids.
Precautions
- Contains alcohol: Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for children, for people with liver disease or epilepsy, or for those abstaining from alcohol. May interact with disulfiram and metronidazole. Always take diluted in a little water or juice.
- Storage: Keep in a cool, dark place, out of reach of children. Shake before use.
Do not use without medical guidance in bile-duct obstruction, cholangitis, liver disease, active peptic ulcer or known gallstones. Pancreatitis, jaundice or severe right-sided abdominal pain require prompt assessment, not self-treatment. Avoid if allergic to Asteraceae plants. Seek advice if taking diuretics, diabetes medicines, lithium or multiple medicines, and during pregnancy, breastfeeding or under 12 years of age.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use it if I have gallstones?
Not without medical guidance. Its bitter, cholagogue action calls for care in disorders of the bile ducts.
How is the tincture taken?
Always diluted in a little water or juice, never neat. Shake the bottle before each use.
Why is it so bitter?
The bitterness comes from dandelion's sesquiterpene lactones and is traditionally seen as part of the herb's character, not a flaw.
