Cistus (labdanum) tincture is a liquid hydroalcoholic extract of Cistus. Alcohol carries the plant's polyphenols and resin, which also give its characteristic aroma.
Key properties
Traditional literature describes it as strongly antioxidant, digestive tonic and soothing, astringent, expectorant, anticatarrhal, analgesic and antispasmodic. Laboratory and preclinical studies have examined polyphenols and flavonoids in relation to oxidative stress, inflammation, LDL, atherosclerosis, circulation, blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides. Preclinical research has also examined influenza, herpes, bacteria and fungi.
Uses
Recorded uses of the herb include:
- cough
- colds
- bronchitis
- sore throat
- bloating
- cramps
- heartburn
- colitis
- gastroenteritis
- insomnia
- bowel and joint inflammation
- fungal complaints
- immune support
Traditional references also include detoxification, heavy metals, heart, blood pressure, cholesterol, anti-ageing and vitiligo, while cancer appears only in preclinical research using cell models.
Decoction is the best-documented preparation for cough. The older eight-hour lukewarm-water maceration remains a gentler traditional alternative and is not equivalent to this tincture. The diluted tincture is traditionally used as a mouth rinse for canker sores, ulcers, periodontitis and bad breath, without swallowing after rinsing.
How to use & dosage
8–10 drops in a little water, up to three times a day.
Amounts follow the producer's own directions. For prolonged use, or if you are taking medication, consult a health professional.
Combinations with other herbs
For cough it combines with thyme or marshmallow, and for the throat with sage. Spearmint complements digestive use, while calendula may be added to a mouth rinse.
Precautions
- Age restriction: The official dosage is for adults only.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding & age: Not recommended under 18 years or during pregnancy or breastfeeding because data are insufficient.
- Allergic reactions: Allergy is possible.
- Duration & professional advice: Breathlessness, fever, purulent sputum or cough lasting over 1 week requires assessment.
- Medical conditions: With chronic illness or medicines for blood pressure, lipids or glucose, seek advice before frequent use.
- Contains alcohol: Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for children, for people with liver disease or epilepsy, or for those abstaining from alcohol. May interact with disulfiram and metronidazole. Always take diluted in a little water or juice.
- Storage: Keep in a cool, dark place, out of reach of children. Shake before use.
