There are many medicinal herbs traditionally used in chronic conditions of the gut, and they have been gaining ground in recent years because they tend to be gentler and adapt easily to specific needs. We have brought five of them together in one formula, with an antispasmodic, carminative and digestive character.
Ingredients
Wild yam, liquorice, caraway, fennel seed, ginger.
Wild yam — described by herbalists as a reliable antispasmodic herb. Historically it has been used for spastic, dyspeptic abdominal pain, for colic associated with irritable bowel, for period pain, and for arthritic or rheumatic pain.
Liquorice — regarded as one of the oldest herbal medicines in the world. It is traditionally used for symptoms of indigestion — acid reflux, stomach upset, heartburn — and has been investigated in relation to peptic ulcer and gastritis.
Caraway (Carum carvi) — traditionally used for indigestion and colic. It has an antispasmodic character and stimulates the production of gastric juices. The characteristic compounds of its seeds soothe the smooth muscle of the digestive tract and help expel wind.
Fennel seed — acts as a carminative, aromatic, antispasmodic and digestive-stimulating herb, with traditional use in bloating and colic.
Ginger — with anti-inflammatory action, it stimulates and tones digestive function and circulation. It is used for nausea, indigestion and abdominal bloating.
How to use
Stir 1 teaspoon of the blend powder into water, juice or a smoothie. Taken 2–3 times a day (or as recommended by your doctor or therapist).
Always follow the label instructions. If you are on medication or have an underlying condition, consult a healthcare professional.
Precautions
Use should be avoided, or undertaken only with the permission of a doctor or therapist, by people with high blood pressure. Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Consult a healthcare professional if you take medication, to avoid possible interactions.
Liquorice. In prolonged or high intake it may raise blood pressure and lower potassium. Not suitable in hypertension, heart or kidney disease, hypokalaemia, or alongside diuretics, corticosteroids or digoxin. Not to be taken continuously for more than 4–6 weeks.
Wild yam. Not suitable in pregnancy or in hormone-dependent conditions.
Ginger. Caution is needed with anticoagulant therapy, in gallstones, and in active gastritis or ulcer.
When a diagnosis is needed. The symptoms of irritable bowel resemble those of other conditions. Blood in the stool, unintended weight loss, fever, night-time symptoms, or a change in bowel habit after the age of 50 require medical investigation. This blend is an accompaniment.
